Chapter 12

Hawk

Agony screamed through me as Bane’s teleportation spell ripped me apart then put me back together again. My hellfire flared out of my eyes and I completely lost my hold on my magic. At the same time, something heavy crunched, shattering glass and making metal squeal, and a white-feathered wing slapped me in the face.

Everyone moaned with desire, and I yanked my magic back under control as quickly as I could. I’d never been teleported before and I hoped to God I never would again. I was only grateful Bane had the spell already preset on his circle, because in his condition he wouldn’t have been able to teleport just himself let alone all six of us. He’d have just burned himself to a crisp and we wouldn’t have gone anywhere.

And he still, even with Amiah powering his glyph, looked like shit.

He lay on his back on the cool damp concrete of his underground garage in a growing pool of blood, his expression stunned, and only a hint of white aura flickered through the writhing black darkness and angry red spikes inside him.

Amiah had heaved forward, her wings fully extended. Her unnatural fae glow blazed bright as her aura, now flecked with gold — likely from the mating brand because the gold hadn’t been there before — snapped and churned inside her. Every time it flared, she tensed and her expression pinched tighter with pain, as if her power had been released without focus, was raging inside her, and couldn’t escape from her body.

Cassius lay beside me — the reason a wing had slapped me in the face — his aura burning bright again with his fire magic, while Rin with his strange seething black aura, had dropped to his knees. His hellfire roared from his eyes like mine had and his fangs were fully extended.

Titus, in his massive dragon form, sat fifteen feet away from us. He was half on a flattened blue sedan as well as the flattened front of a brown pickup, and crammed between a concrete pillar, and a minivan that had been squished against a second concrete pillar.

His gold-red aura heaved with his beast’s rage and I couldn’t blame him. Everything within me had frozen in horror when we’d run into the clean room and seen Rin straddling Amiah, her nose broken and bleeding and a bleeding gash in her neck. And worse, I’d felt a desperate, painful desire radiating from both of them.

They were fighting it. Both of them. Neither of them wanted to feel what they were feeling, and yet they couldn’t help themselves. The ache was almost as strong as the overwhelming need I’d felt from Amiah when she’d first entered my tent. It was filled with power and too much pain.

She was going to fall in love with him and hate herself for it.

And all I could do was be by her side, help her through it, and pray the Heart could free her… or add me to their bond.

Except to do that, we needed to get as far away from Bane’s apartment as possible.
